 New From Extrema Ratio The RAO STEEL




Here is a glimpse of the new RAO Steel from Extrema Ratio. It comes in 2 versions, a dark stone washed N690 steel and a Nitrogen steel version (shown above) which is uncoated (great for everyone concerned about knife coatings and whether they are food safe or not!).

It's a sort of fixed blade, bare bones, tactical-esque  field knife for those on the go, with the no nonsense super easy to maintain RAO folding knife original blade shape. Light in weight but super strong and according to ER "Indestructible"*

This image (directly below) was taken by me at IWA 2025 this March. Please note: The knife itself does NOT come with the paracord wrapping, this was simply done for show at the convention and wrapped as such will NOT fit into the supplied scabbard. More on this later!

The knife has a 5mm spine thickness and as such as a monolithic design is basically indestructible* The following product pictures supplied from Extrema Ratio! (You all know my field pictures are a whole lot better LOL!)

Personally, I would rather have seen this knife released in 6mm thickness instead of 5mm because I think the USA market which is unquestionably the biggest knife market, has a thing about 1/4" - 6mm thick knives even if 6mm thick knives can be too thick somethings! That all being said, the 5mm thickness is NOT a detriment to using this knife and of course decreases the overall weight of a EDC type carry.



* No knife is REALY indestructible however within the limits of reasonable use and even somewhat unreasonable use as apposed to sheer ABUSE, this knife can take it for all outdoor pursuits.

Don't forget before cord wrapping to actually make your blade safe for handling!

Note:
In order to really use this knife one needs to cord wrap the handle otherwise it is a gloved hand only that is needed due to the shape of the tang.




 It looks funky and it IS BUT in order not to use gloves you must cord wrap the tang. There are hundreds of ways to do this plus more but i just used a simple "Strider" type wrap.

The Nitrogen alloy version seen above in MY images has a HRC of 58.

Ok as I indicated the only way to successfully use this knife I believe is to cord wrap the handle. That's perfectly ok if you understand this before purchasing this knife. Once cord wrapped it's a veritable mini beast of a knife with a military proven blade design.

However, there is a caveat! If you cord wrap the handle it will no longer fit into the minimalist scabbard, 

As to the strap material I have requested this information from ER and am awaiting a reply. However, I'm sure it is of some "military grade" flexible plastic but let's see eh?



without some basic modification, ie the use of an appropriate hot air gun  and some careful remoulding of the Kydex scabbard. This is NOT a difficult task. I however, chose to make a more "organic" scabbard consisting of homemade corrugated cardboard micarta and 100% cotton micarta all made with water clear casting epoxy resin cured overnight at 25C. Ok it's not finished as yet but here is a sneak preview.
This very thin but very strong scabbard also features a thin PET liner to prevent the blade from damaging the scabbard.
Once the resin is fully cured then it will be super strong.

Here is my finished friction fit scabbard with a more narrow lateral profile. It also features approximately 3.5m of 2mm static climber's accessory cord from the famous French climbing equipment manufacturer, Simond (made in France). The paracord wrap is made in the USA 550 paracord, not my favourite cordage as paracord is too dynamic and always twists but is fine for cord wrapping a small knife such as this.




This scabbard may look a little "Heath Robinson" however, it serves a purpose for me.





Ok let's look at this knife in more detail

Certainly the bare bones knife is great for "customisation" and this will appeal to those who enjoy this sort of thing. In fact i think it would be very easy to 3D print one's own handle too. Maybe I'll make up a little Fusion 360 file one day!


For those of you not familiar with the Famous RAO folding knife series from Extrema Ratio. This blade shape was chosen by  the 185th Rgt. (Ricognizione e Acquisizione Obiettivi) Target Acquisition Regiment, tasked Extrema Ratio to develop essentially a folding field knife that could be used in a survival situation. From this the RAO folding knife was born, basically an indestructible folding knife. Further to this model, future ergonomic improvements followed with the RAOII series. 

Regardless of what others may have said, I have over the years demonstrated their excellent versatility and durability along with field maintenance across both hemispheres; not from my "bedroom or garage". These are very durable and strong folding knives.

Ok, so now in 2025, Extrema Ratio showcased the RAO STEEL at IWA 2025. This as you now know a lightweight fixed blade EDC knife which carries a very similar blade design to the RAO knife. One might be thinking: "oh they have run out of ideas"! No, this is a greta idea because of the proven versatility of the tanto type design for super easy field maintenance by the enlisted operator.




This is a very thick un-sharpened tip, so no chance of tip damage should the knife be used for penetration tasks.


Just like on the folding version the spine has a generous amount of non-finger damaging gimping (only about half is shown here due to my cord wrapping!)


Red arrows indicate a fals edge whereas the white arrows indicate cutting surfaces. Once can see that the main blade is not quite totally flat but very close to it with an ever so slight outward curvature. None the less, an simple field maintianable design. 

Now to the Business End of Things

What alloy of "Nitrogen steel" are they using? Saying "Nitrogen steel" could be anything and I think they should change this marketing tactic because these days end users for whatever reason want to know what they are buying.  

The simple answer is I do not know at present and have requested this information from ER. Suffice it to say that the stated Rockwell hardness is listed on the blade as HRC 58. There are several such cutlery grade Nitrogen steels which would fit into this HRC range. They say it is easy to field sharpen and maybe I'm thinking it's not Nitro V but then let's not guess eh. Maybe I will ask a friend to use his X-ray fluorescence (XRF) machine to test the steel and simply put my findings here? Let's see what ER says.

I have cut one year old birch timber with the knife and certainly the edge is holding up just fine.

 16,000 Km! No Damage to Case or Contents! Wow What Case Is This?

The TACTIX Hard case is made from "Foamed Polypropylene" which is:


Key properties are as follows:

  • Lightweight
  • Closed Cell Structure
  • Good Energy absorption (more so for expanded PP)
  • Acts as a good thermal insulator
  • Exhibits high toughness and mechanical properties, this is super important!
  • Readily recyclable (Foamed polypropylene, if not cross-linked. So this IS recyclable.



We used the large case to transport a brushless RC vehicle  16,000Km! This was very easy as the case comes with excellent "pick and pluck foam" which enabled us to custom design the case in  a hurry, without the use of any tools.



You will note that the case also features a "O-ring" type rubber seal to keep out dust and heavy rain as the case is rated for IP65.



Not shown was that we also transported besides this RC vehicle 2 UV flashlights (no batteries of course :)!
They also arrived un damaged!

The case comes with great foam padding and these are not optional extras as are often seen in competitors cases at a far greater price point.

Let's take a closer look at the details:

here is an automatic purge pressure valve a vital item for those who fly and open the case whilst at a negative (below sea level pressure), otherwise it is very difficult to re-open such case types once back at sea level

Sturdy thick metal hardware is seen in the clasps that lock the case lid.

Summary

Ok I was in a hurry to purchase a hard case for urgent extensive air travel and I had two alternatives: to purchase another 1510 Pelicase (I have several plus other much larger Pelicases, OR purchase this TACTIX hard case instead. The crazy thing is that the Tactix case was a mere $49-00 AUS dollars and the Pelicase 1200 which is IP67 Ok a bit more waterproof than the Tactix cases) and does NOT come with any pick and pluck foam, this is extra; is approx $165-00 AUS dollars! So I can buy 3 cases for the price of one (without the foam inserts!!).

How tough is this case?

The fact that this Tactix case survived 2 vehicle trips (excess of 300km) and  approximately 16,000km air miles (ok air kilometersm you get my point!) and 4 lots of baggage handlers plus baggage machinery etc. is good enough for me!

any hobbyists wanting to transport sensitive equipment etc.

How to destroy a dive watch bezel by going surfing. A need to Know Tip for all watch lovers.

 How to Destroy a Dive Watch Bezel by Going Surfing? (or regular beach Fishing)


Diving every weekend and often one night per week, "playing at the beach" and beach fishing, along with caving etc. All potentially dirty environments (especially caving) will decrease the life of your watch bezel.

Here we see (or rather don't see) the Citizen 200m Eco Drive dive watch a super companion for over 20 years! with the bezel missing; lost in action in the surf one day. This watch was constantly getting grit in the ratchet mechanism of the bezel (even with care) since I was wearing it all the time for diving EVEN in crap conditions as I just had to go diving and this was the result after some years! Oh well!

The bezel failed because the actual case worn in a critical area from abrasive sand particles and hence was NOT possible to be repaired!

Let's see how to avoid this undue wear and tear (or how to live with it!).





A mighty watch the ECO DRIVE BN 176-08E  of which bezel mechanism is extremely good and rates are pretty good for being easy to clean.
             Wish I bought this model when I had the chance!


My Seiko Prospex 200m diver (a gift from my dear old mum!)

On loan from Mrs BushCampingTools, this super watch (Casio Protrek) has also seen 2 tours of the middle east - volunteer Doctor medical aid. Note it IS bezel-less and hence immune (well almost0 to the ingression of sand particles!



A better type of watch for the beach!



                                  There is no one coming around here on this beach!



Don't ge this Seiko in the sand!



Dive watches, usually characterised by having a uni directional rotating bezel are synonymous for being rugged watches by default in relation to their intended usage, ie diving!

However, this ruggedness can soon be destroyed by some simple mistakes, mistakes which are not related to dropping or smashing the watch.


Here's how:


Wearing your dive watch in a hot bath or spa or even a hot shower. The reason being is that the watch rubber seals can expand and thus with this movement it is possible to alter the seal between the rubber O-rings and the watch back or watch crystal and or watch crown, therefore allowing the ingress of water. This amount of water is impossible to tell unless a full on failure and you'll see your watch hands swimming around inside the case! 

You may not even see any evidence of liquid water after such repeated treatments. You may just start to notice that condensation has now been occurring within your watch when it was never present before (always an indicator of a service could be required dependent upon the amount of condensation present).


Don't bathe in hot water with your dive watch!


How about surfing and simply going to the beach for a bit of light swimming etc or lazing around on the sand? What harm could this possibly do to such a tough watch impregnable to the ingress of water at depths ususally from 200m plus?


Here's the thing, some beaches (and it is not uncommon) contain very abrasive sand particles know as Zircon.Yes, that's right Zircon, it's a very hard mineral (hardness 8 on MOH's scale) and is indeed mined from what are known a "placer deposits" and these placer deposits are almost exclusively located close to beaches (or what were once ancient beaches). These super hard particles of "sand" can enter the tiny gaps (in ALL DIVE watches regardless of who makes them) under the rotating bezel and remain there, no matter how hard you try to "wash them out", with the only way to clean the bezel is to have it professionally removed and cleaned. Constant or regular swimming in dirty or rough beach surf with a lot of fine sand particles in the water column will also reduce the life of your dive watch bezel mechanism. Once these particles are lodged within the mechanism, constant rotating of the bezel will act to abrade metal (in the best) and or plastic ratchet mechanisms within the bezel and watch case.


If one plans to actually use their watch bezel, especially for diving then it's always best to avoid/resist diving in very poor visibility water (professional divers don't get that option!), to avoid fine sand particles which are ALL abrasive (even quartz SiO2 is abrasive with a hardness of 7) from giving you extra chores of cleaning your watch bezel after a trip to the beach or diving in sand filled waters.
